Dani’s Monthly Mashterpieces Column

Who? I’m Dani!

What? I’m on the search for free or low-cost activities/hobbies to feed my brain some shiny bits of artsy stuff instead of disassociating to the scrolls of the ticky-tockies and I’m going to tell you about them.

When? Each month I’ll try a new style, project, medium, DIY, hobby or who-knows-what and tell you the pros and cons and details of how it all went down. Will it last months and months? Will I fall madly in love with bedazzling in Month 3 and feature only bedazzled art moving forward? Only time will tell…

Where? To be featured in the potatoes of course…

Why?  I’ve been having a hard time lately navigating the desire to be creative and participate in an artistic activity and the want to be “good” at the thing I’m doing and to want to want to do it. Do I like this hobby-type thing I’m doing? Do I like it because I really do like it or because I’m “supposed” to like it? If I don’t like it - is it because I feel like I’m bad at it? What does bad at it mean? Who says I’m bad at it? Do I like it enough to practice it? Do I think I do not like it because it’s not something I want to post on social media or I’m not compelled to create an Etsy store for or mass produce for consumption because it’s not good enough? Or do I genuinely not like this activity? & if I do like this hobby and it fills my cup and makes me happy to not be doom-scrolling the tiny screen, can I do it just for that reason without feeling like I’m doing it because I think I should want to do it? Can I be really proud of it and want to share it and it also stay as something that simply makes me happy? I’m going to send these creative mashterpieces into the monthly newsletter - “good” or “bad” or “mediocre” - with a brain dump of the process, the pros and cons I felt along the way, and some links of the supplies I got with the costs and any references I used (because hobbies are expensive). Whether you’re looking for a new hobby too, or can or can’t relate to the desire to figure out little joys and activities that you actually like or what actually fills your cup not just what you would like to like or think you should like, or you are just supportive of the potato bits, I hope you’ll enjoy seeing some different styles and hobbies here and if you can’t relate to them now, they’ll live as a storehouse of easily procured artistic options to perhaps be referenced in a season of your life you feel like you need them, as is the potato way.
